The greenhouses are on a well exposed balcony to South at the third and last floor  of a villa in Cirič,  in Turin’s province. Cirič is around 350 m altitude over sea level, in a pre-hilly flat plain with snowy mountains in the background.  Lat and long are more or less those of the airport of Turin  Caselle: 7.65E, 45.22N.   The climate is rigid in winter and sultry heat in summer. This year the  min. temp. has been -5° C.
The raininess (always less predictable ) is concentrated in  spring and summer months.  The photos of the small greenhouses are:

  1. (the shelf/greenhouse) with which I started   and
  2. this last  is of only two squares meters but it is very beautiful and functional.

In total I have  about 500 plants.   A plant will pass the winter in greenhouse 2 (min. temp.: 6° C) the other one will be  put outdoor on the sunny balcony sheltered by of a transparent roofing.

August -  07 - 2003: The test plants just repotted

First day after re-potting

Aug - 07 - 03 I repotted all the plants that you have sent me in square pots 9x9x10 cm in black plastics. For the plants of the test I have used a soil for Opuntia formed from: 7 parts of volcanic rock , 3 parts of white peat, 2 parts of perlite. I have added half chalk gram for vase and, always for vase, three grams a mixture of Fingernails and horns roasted (organic long lasting fertilizer), mineral super-phosphate (title 19) and sulphate of potassium in parts 2:1:1. I have bathed the plants for immersion adding two fungicides: the Caulisan (Propamocarb) and the Enovit-Metil in doses of 2ml for every 3l of water.
Aug - 21 -  03 - The plants are all very well, after a couple of weeks from re-potting they are completely recovered. The temperatures of the first week have been exceptional, with max also of 42 degrees in the daytime and min above the 25 by night. Now all seems re-entered in the norm. It rains once a day the evening and the temperatures go up in the daytime few above to the thirty and actually go down to 18 the night. Also dampness has passed by Amazonian values to levels in average with those seasonal. I water the plants once a week. This has given back turgidity to the Opuntias stock that now, unlike what can be seen in the photo, they hold up the scions without hesitation. The photo has been taken on the first day. The quality is not exceptional but Ugo Caponetto was in vacations... I will make up (as soon as possible) for some better photos that shows the plants after one month from the repotting. Even if there is not now much difference one of the Pediocactus is already in the greenhouse, the other Pediocactus and the Sclerocactus I uncover them out together with various untamable Opuntias. The Sclerocactus secretes a sugary sap (little, to say the truth) from the next areolas to the collar. To the middle of all these has also appeared a reddish dot that seems (but almost surely is not) a microscopic bud!!!
