I live and grow
hundreds of hardy cacti in southwest Wisconsin in the small city of
Westby (population 1800). Westby's elevation is 1200 feet above sea
level. My climate is rather severe here- USDA Zone 4 (maximum low
-40 C). I have grown P. despainii on it's own roots here for two
years. Pediocactus simpsonii, P. simpsonii var. minor, P. nigrispinus,
and P. knowltonii are also capable of surviving in my raised gravel
beds. But they must be covered from fall and early spring rains. I
have flowered several species. The thing that kills my Pediocactus
the most often is long stretches of hot humid summer nights. The
same applies to various Sclerocactus that I have tried over the
years. most make it a few years, but perish in the summer humidity.
They can take the cold if kept dry.
I would love to try a few grafted plants to see if this improves
their performance. |
