I would like to participate in the Winter hardy test. The location where my collection is kept is in Athens, Greece. The collection is housed on the 4rth floor of an apartment in the centre of Athens, near a park ("Pedion Areos"). The altitude of the place should be around 300 meters above sea level. The balcony is of an "L" shape with a total plan area around 120 m2. One part of it is facing north and the other is facing west.

The west facing balcony is protected from rain during the winter months with an overhead tent. The maximum temperature recorded in shade is 42 degrees C and the minimum -3 degrees C. The relative humidity during the winter months is relatively high, due to the park which is near by. In the early hours during winter condensation which forms during the night can be seen on the plastic tents.

The north facing balcony is protected during the winter months with vertical and horizontal retractable tents from heavy duty transparent plastic, thus creating a kind of green-house, cutting out wind, rain and humidity. The  minimum temperature recorded is 1 degree C and the relative humidity is lower. During the summer the tents are rolled up.

The test plants in their new home

January 17 2004 Dear Mr. Valentino Vallicelli
I would like to send you an update of the Winter test plants so far. The plant in the photos without the label is the plant which is kept in a sheltered place, where the temperature has not dropped below 18 degrees Celsius and is given an occasional spray about once a week. The other plants are kept outside, sheltered from rain and have not  been watered since the 10th of November 2003. The lowest temperature recorded so far is 0 degrees Celsius.

May 27 2004 Please find attached the photos of the plants at the end of the test period. During the last winter we have experienced two periods with low temperatures. The first period in January we had a minimum temperature of -2 degrees which lasted for only a night. The second period, around the 12th of February, we had snow on the first day followed by five days of frost with temperatures well below 0 degrees. The minimum temperature recorded during the night was -5 degrees Celsius.

Best regards

Lambros Babilis
