between +30 and -35 °C in a normal year. The minimum temperature may be
-37 or even -40 °C in a very hard winter. A cold period may last
for many weeks. The climate is rainy. In the winter we get about
50 - 70 cm of snow to protect the cacti from cold.

Landscape: Ähtäri (a small town close to the Jyväskylä city; the cacti will be planted there)

The test plants in their new home

August 23 2003:The cacti arrived in good condition . Thank you very much!
I repotted them and a photo is attached in this email. I will
repot them in separate pots when I take them to the place where
they will stay next winter.

Opuntia  polyacantha looked in the spring as if it had not survived, but surprisingly it had grown three beautiful pads in August.

August 18 2004  Hi Valentino, I send photos and information on the cacti to you now. Unfortunately  Sclerocactus glaucus and two Pediocactus despainii did not survive.  I also had two Opuntia polyacantha that I had grown from seed. In the spring they looked as if they had not survived, but yesterday I surprisingly noticed that the other of them had grown three new pads.

December 31 2003
Cacti have been covered by snow.

Sclerocactus glaucus did not survive.
