  A suffix is a word element that is placed at the end of a word or word part to change its meaning or grammatical function and form a new word  


Follows a short list of some of the most common suffix used in biology and horticulture.

 

-able, -ible

Forms adjectives and means “capable or worthy of”

(Likable, flexible)

-borne

Denoting something (usually referred to pathogens) carried by, transported by some means of transport. 

(Soilborne, airborne)

-cide (or -icide)

Indicating killing or killer

-facing

pointing in a particular direction

(Northfacing  Southfacing)

-free

A privative adjective suffix , denoting without, lacking, destitute of, not having;

(Soil-free)

-fy, -ify

forms verbs and means “to make or cause to become”

(Purify, acidify, humidify)

-gram

something written or drawn, a record

(Diagram)

-graph

something written or drawn; an instrument for writing, drawing, or recording

(Phonograph, seismograph)

-icide (or -cide)

Indicating killing or killer

(Pesticide, fungicide, insecticide)

-less

A privative adjective suffix , denoting without, lacking, destitute of,
not having;

(Soil-less)

-like

A suffix converting nouns into adjectives expressing closely resemblance to the noun

(paper-like, leaf-like, scale-like, tree-like, etc.)

-logy

discourse, expression; science, theory, study

(Biology, pedology)

-ment

forms nouns from verbs

(Amendment)

-oid

forms adjectives and nouns and means “like, resembling” or “shape, form”

(Humanoid, spheroid)

-phile

one that loves or has a strong affinity for; loving

(Gypsophile)

-phobe, -phobia

one that fears a specified thing; an intense fear of a specified thing

 

-ty, -ity

forms nouns from adjectives
