The genus  name "Echinopsis" derives from the Greek word “echinos (εχινος) ” meaning "porcupine or hedgehog", "sea urchin and the word "opsis (οφις)" meaning “appearance, seeing, like” referring to the spines that cover the plant as it looks like a rolled up hedgehog.
