The genus name "Sulcorebutia" derives from the Latin word “sulcus” meaning "furrow, groove” referring to the (woolly) furrow in the upper part of the tubercles, and “Rebutia” (genus named for Pierre Rebut, 19th century French cactus dealer and expert)
