The genus  name "Trichocereus" (now incorporated in Echinopsis)  is derived from the Greek word “thrix (τριχος)” which means “hair, wool, bristle” and refers to the hairs covering the floral tube and “Cereus” the name of a genus of columnar cacti. ( The genus name implies: "hairy Cereus")
