This plant is
a Hypocotyl-graft  ( Derived from a sophisticated  grafting technique that guarantee a fast growth along with a long life and an easy cultivation, in addition hypocotyl-grafted plants develop an attractive swollen caudex-like rootstock)

Synonyms: Neogomesia agavoides 'Spiny'

Conservation status: Listed in CITES appendix I

 

The spiny form of A. agavoides is quite remarkable, but occasionally a seedling show this uncommon feature, perhaps it is an inherited character due to a  rare combination of recessive genes.
