This is a miniature cactus that bears showy  pale pink flowers that are the same size (or greater) as the plant bodies – it can flower when the size of 1,5 cm only!

Description: miniature clumping succulent, clusters when small.
Stems: Flattened, blue/green, thick growing up to 4 cm in diameter, 6 cm long.
Spines: white bristly, straight or curved
Flowers: Bell  to funnel-shaped, 6 cm wide, are an unusual shade of lavender-white in early spring followed by green fruits.
This slow-growing plant will eventually form clusters up to 15cm across.

Cultivation: Gymnocalycium bruchii is one of the most cold tollerant South American species it can grow outdoor and is hardy to -15° C or less. Prefer a low pH  compost otherwise growth will stop altogether. The plant tolerate extremely bright situations  but enjoy  some shade during the hottest part of the day in summer. Water regularly in summer, keep rather dry in winter

Origin:  Argentina. Endemic to the Córdoba and San Luis provinces.

Habitat: Inhabits a wide range of environments and altitudes.

Conservation status: Listed in CITES appendix 2.

Synonyms:  
  • Frailea bruchii
  • Gymnocalycium lafaldense


The variety niveum is very handsome and has dense white spines that almost conceal the plant stem.
