Desription: Small usually solitary geophyitic cacti, partly underground.
Stem: Flattened globular, 25 (60)mm high 40-55mm wide dark green or glaucous green.
Tubercles: Pyramidal.
Areoles: young areoles with white wool, older are bare.
Root:
Napiform root.
Radial spines: 5-8 in juvenile plants, disappearing in adults.
Central spines: 1 (occasionally 2) yellowish curved upwards 2-3mm long on mature areoles only.
Flowers:
Funnel shaped, whitish with pinkish-magenta middle-stripe, 18-22 mm wide.
Fruits: Urn-shaped, brown, 5mm long.

The first flower.

Cultivation: It’s a fairly easy species to cultivate, but grows very slowly.  It needs a very well-drained soil. It also requires strong sun to part sun to develop good spinal growth.  Waterings should be rather infrequent, to keep the plant compact, and to avoid it becoming excessively elongated and unnatural in appearance.  Keep dry in winter, or when night temperatures remain below 10° C, it is hardy to -4°C for a short period. Assure a good ventilation.
