Virus [ Biology - Pathology ]

Dictionary of botanic terminology - index of names

A virus is a small particle which can infect other biological organisms, it consisting of little more than a package of genetic material (DNA or RNA) in a protein or lipid envelope.

Viruses are obligate intracellular parasites meaning that they can only reproduce by invading and taking over other cells as they lack the cellular machinery for self reproduction.
