Aboveground biomass [ Botany , Ecology ]

The aboveground portion of a plant (corresponding to the shoot system) , excluding the root system.

The above ground biomass indicate the organic matter stored in plants, not including roots and soil. For example in a typical forest, 80% of the total organic matter is above ground while only 10% of the total organic matter is above ground in grasslands.
