  Anatomically away from the point of attachment or origin.  

Specifically applied in botany to describe the remote or extreme free end of a structure or organ. That part of any appendage situated away from the centre of the body, or from the point of origin or attachment. An extremity, an apex.

The opposite of distal is proximal.
