Dictionary of botanic terminology - index of names

The dominant species is the plant (or groups of plants) species that exerts a controlling influence on both the biotic and abiotic components of its community or defines the character of the community.

Usually in ecology the dominant species are the plants which, in terms of abundance, coverage, or size, exert a major controlling influence upon the conditions of existence for associated species in the ecosystem.
