Scientific names are write in Latin which has three genders:
(m) masculine (masculinum),
(f) feminine (femininum)
(n) neuter (neutrum).

Genitive	-i	*-ae*	-i	*-is*	*-is*

The gender of the nouns is natural, i.e. in accordance with their sex (especially if they are living creatures), or grammatical, i.e. in accordance with their terminations.
