Pseudocephalium [ Botany ]

  A nonphotosynthetic hairy structure on the side near the apex of the stem of some cacti , such as Cephalocereus and Espostoa where flowers are produced.  
     
The pseudocephalium is an area on the side of the stem with much denser hair and bristly spines that grows on the side, close to the top of the stem, of some species of cacti.
Only mature plants develops the lateral pseudocephalium. This is the area where the flower buds and fruit are produced.


Only Melocactus, Discocactus and Bakebergia have a true cephalium on the crown.
