  A reappearance of an earlier characteristic (atavism) a return to a previous state as in a mutation.  
     
Sometimes a particular cultivar might change back to one of its original ancestors characteristic, to a former state. (e.g. Change of a variegated sport back to its original solid colour predecessor, Returning of double flowers to single, etc.)
A return to a normal phenotype (usually resulting from a second mutation), a regression. The restitution of a mutant gene to the wild-type condition, or at least to a form that gives the wild phenotype; more generally, the appearance of a trait expressed by a remote ancestor.
