Selective breeding  [  Genetics  ]
Synonym: Selective hybridization

Dictionary of botanic terminology - index of names

Making deliberate crosses or matings of organism so that the offspring will have desired characteristics derived from one or both of the parents.

Selective Breeding is a human-controlled breeding programme consisting in combining the desirable traits of at least two genotypes. In a selective breeding program specific plants or animals are chosen to breed or mate (produce offspring) because they have particularly useful or valuable features. The aim is to produce offspring with desired traits in subsequent generations.
As a result new cultivars  are produced and subsequently maintained by vegetative propagation or by inbred seed.
