  A dark or black velvety coating of mycelium of various fungi developing on the honeydew that insects such as aphids, mealybugs, scales and white flies deposit on the leaves, fruit, or other exposed parts of plants  
     
Sooty moulds grow epiphytically, utilizing honeydew, and form dark, spongy, hyphal mats on the surfaces of certain plants; They are responsible for reducing photosynthesis (indirect damage) and can be referred to as contamination, often rendering plants or fruits very  unattractive .
