Description: Basally branching, cactus, Usually erect but sometimes
prostrate and sprawling
Stem: Small, cylinder-shapedpale green stems (tan colour in full sun), up to
15cm long, 2-3cm thick; 7 to 9 notched ribs;
Spines: White to brown or yellow.
Flowers: Extremely attractive and impressive. Bright yellow, 12 cm
wide, with a red throat in early April-May.
Fruit: A small green berry covered with short bristles
Cultivation: This plant
needs good drainage,
Do not over water. They
need to be kept in a cool place during winter rest (at -5 +10°C) this is important for the flowers as well as for their health. Without
this cool winter period they normally wont get any buds. It is quite frost hardy -7 (-10)° C.
Best in full or partial sun exposure.

Origin: C. papillosus comes from USA (south Texas) and Mexico (N
Tamaulipas, N Nuevo Leon )
Var. angusticeps is found in a small area of
northwestern Hidalgo County, and a very small area of adjacent Starr
County (texas).
