  A compound flower is a flower head or  inflorescence resembling a single flower, but in fact composed of several independent  florets enclosed in a common
calyx-like involucre, with outer ray flowers forming "petals" surrounding the inner disc flowers, as in the Compositae or Asteraceae family.
