  The distinct green o usually not highly coloured, outer whorl parts (collectively the calyx) of the flower that look like little leaves (opposed to the usually more colourful petals)  
     
Sepals surround the corolla (if present) and fertile organs of the flower and cover the outside of a flower bud to protect the flower before it opens.
