Dictionary of botanic terminology - index of names

The type genus of a taxon is the genus that is designated as representative of the family to which it belongs., and in plants all taxa up to division, are named after the type genus.

The genus and these higher taxa are typified by a specimen that shows the characteristics of the genus. The specimen used to describe this species is preserved as an holotype and designated as a generitype in a herbarium to be available for further study. The type genus it is not necessarily the most representative genus but often the largest or best known or earliest described.
