Copiapoa pepiniana v.
fiedleriana North Huasco. Atacama, Chile.
|
What is this plant?
Copiapoa pepiniana is a doubtfull species sometime
regarded as a synonymy of
C. coquimbana.
It is indeed hard to know what C. pepiniana should be
referred to since nobody really knows what it is. This plant epithet is
in fact a “Nomen dubium” that is a “Doubtfull name”.
Identifying these old names is difficult because often the types were
not preserved therefore later collectors and growers have stuck the name
on different and often unrelated plants. C.
pepiniana var fiedleriana should be the same as C.
fiedleriana, a strongly spined plant which you could describe as
intermediate between
C. coquimbana and C. echinata.
