Description: The plant is considered to be a miniature cactus. It only grows to be 4 cm high and has a 5-6cm diameter
Flowers of this species have a silky appearance and  range from white, greenish/tan to pink.

G. mihanovichii has given rise to several hybrids and colour mutants   (lacking chlorophyll), the more famous of them are the  cultivars ‘Hibotan'  ( a pure red mutant) and ‘Hibotan nishiki' (the variegated form)
The colour mutants partly or totally lack vital functions and therefore can only survive as grafted specimens, obtaining their nourishment from a green stock plant to with which they are united

Feed with a high potassium fertilizer  in summer. It is quite frost resistant if kept dry (hardy to  -5° C) Sun Exposure: Light shade to half shade.

Propagation: Direct sow after last frost. (seldom produces offsets). Colour mutants and variegates cultivars are propagated by graft.
