A six
headed plant blooming |
Dichotomous, trichotomous, quadritochomous…. polytomichous.
Polytomy is a form of
cristation, an
apex divided in 2, 3, 4 … or
in a lot of
smaller apexes.
It is very unusual to see such a Strombocactus.
Some of
these
plants are very nice sculptures one
different
from another. There are also plants that show the classical
line cristation
and polytomy at the same time. All of our multi
headed plants are
grafted on
Opuntia compressa stock.
Cultivation: It’s a relatively easy species to
cultivate, but very slow growing.
It needs a very well drained soil, and requires
strong sun to part sun to develop good growth.
Waterings
should be rather infrequent to keep the plant compact, and not to become
excessively elongated and unnatural in appearance. Keep dry in
winter, or when night temperatures remain below 10° C (but some people
give this plant a light monthly watering to prevent the drying and
shedding of the lower tubercles.)
It is hardy to
-4°C for a short period. Assure good ventilation.
Propagation: It can be reproduced by cuttings,
but it is often grafted because difficult and slow to grow on its own
roots.
