Pollen tube [ Botany ]

Dictionary of botanic terminology - index of names

A slender tube that grows from a pollen grain on the stigma of a flower, down though the style, into the ovary.

This tube develops from the wall of the pollen grain once the male's pollen have arrived on the stigma during fertilization, pollen tubes develop within the style. The pollen tube provide a channel way for the male gametophytes to reach to the ovule in the embryo sac (where fertilization of the ovule occurs and the seeds will develop).
