Epigynous  [ Botany ]

Dictionary of botanic terminology - index of names

Above the gynoecium,  referring to floral parts, petals, sepals and stamens (floral cup or hypanthium), inserted on or above the ovary, but below the base of the pistil(s).

Epigynous floral parts arise from tissue that is fused to the ovary wall, and the ovary, therefore, is 'inferior'; i.e. attached below the insertion of the flower parts. (q.v. Inferior Ovary).

(Compare with Hypogynous, perigynous)
